Steps To Getting Your Colorado Driver’s License

Getting Your Pre-Registration Code

Colorado Driver Handbook (Official DMV Guide)

The Colorado Driver Handbook is the state’s official guide to the rules of the road. It is published by the Colorado DMV, it is free, and the written permit test is based on it. If your teen is getting ready for a permit, this is the book to study.

What to focus on for the written test

  • Traffic signals, signs and pavement markings
  • Right-of-way at intersections, roundabouts and crosswalks
  • Speed limits, stopping distance and the three-second following rule
  • Turning, signaling, lane changes and passing
  • Rules for drivers under 18: permit requirements, passenger limits and curfew
  • Sharing the road with bicyclists, motorcycles, pedestrians, trucks, school buses and light rail
  • Night driving, snow and ice, and mountain driving
  • Impaired driving laws, seat belts and the hands-free phone law

Studied up? Take the written test with us.

We are a state-certified third-party testing provider, so you can take the written permit test at any of our four locations instead of waiting on a DMV appointment. $40, and that includes two attempts.

Not there yet? Our 30-hour driver’s ed class covers everything in the handbook with a certified instructor, and it is the class Colorado requires before a permit at 15.
