IMPORTANT: NEW COLORADO GDL LAWS - APRIL 2026
Colorado’s driver’s education requirements are changing April 1, 2026. All teens through age 18 will now be required to complete the 30-hour driver’s education course. These laws are on the books now and enforcement begins January 2027. We encourage families to get ahead of the requirements early.

Parent Safe Driving Workshop
Teens learn to drive by watching you first. This online workshop will help parents build the confidence and know-how to model safe habits and coach a new driver through the licensing process. Complete it from home, on your own schedule. Learn more here.

HOW IT WORKS: GETTING YOUR TEEN'S DRIVER'S LICENSE
Enroll in Driver's Education
Choose between our in-person weekend classes or online self-paced course. Complete the 30-hour requirement within six months.
Pass the Written Permit Test
After completing classroom education and reaching the minimum age of 14 years and 11 months, take the Colorado Written Permit Test at any of our locations. The fee includes two attempts.
Practice with Your Permit
Complete at least 50 hours of supervised driving (we recommend 100+ hours), including 10 hours at night.
Complete Behind-the-Wheel Training
Schedule your behind-the-wheel lessons through the student portal. Lessons are released approximately 60 days in advance on the 16th of each month. For Essential Pack students, we recommend completing your first lesson within the first 3-6 months of holding your permit, your second lesson in months 4-8, and your third lesson close to your planned drive skills test date.
Take Your Driver's License Test
After holding your permit for 12 months and logging required practice hours, schedule your certified third party drive test at any of our locations.
Total Timeline: Most teens complete the entire process in about 18 months from enrollment to licensed driver.
Our Teen Driver's Education Programs
Each student has different needs and learning styles, so we offer classroom and online education options to cater to individual preferences.
30-Hour In-Person Class
Community Driving School’s state-certified 30-hour classroom course covers everything the State of Colorado requires, plus personal touches from our experienced instructors. The class is broken down into 4 individual days.
Each day stands alone. You can take them in ANY order you like. As long as you complete all four within 6 months (as required by state law), you can attend as your schedule allows. Many families pair classes over a weekend or during school breaks to complete them quickly.
4-Hour Driver Awareness
Under Colorado’s GDL law, this course fulfills the classroom requirement for teens ages 15½ to 16 and starting April 1, 2026, it also satisfies the new requirement for adults ages 18–21 who don’t yet have their permit.
Please note: You can take either the 4-Hour Driver Awareness Course or the 30-Hour Driver’s Ed Course to fulfill this requirement. Starting April 1, 2026, ages 16-18 will be required to take the 30-hour course.
This teen driving class covers the required state content, including Driving for Beginners, Making Good Decisions, and Driving Behaviors. Classes are held monthly via Zoom from 4:30 pm to 8:30 pm. This package includes the written permit test.
Self-Paced 30-Hour Class Online
Learn at your own pace through our partnership with DriversEd Colorado. This complete 30-hour Colorado teen online driving course offers the newest online driver’s education experience.
This course is designed as a road trip across the United States, incorporating the latest research into driver habits, safety features of new vehicles, and all the required topics the state requires.
Behind-the-Wheel Training
Our teen driver’s education program offers six hours of behind-the-wheel in-car training. During this course, our certified instructors teach students to control their steering to ensure safety for themselves and others, while observing all traffic laws. Training is conducted in company vehicles equipped with safety brakes and extra mirrors.
Students can schedule their lessons online through the student portal. The lesson schedule is released approximately 60 days in advance on the 16th of each month: the August schedule becomes available June 16th, the September schedule on July 16th, and so on.
For students in the Teen Essential Pack, we recommend spacing your lessons throughout your permit period: complete your first lesson within the first 3-6 months, your second lesson in months 4-8, and your third lesson close to when you plan to take your drive skills test.
Skills Day
Skills Day is a hands-on experience held at the Jefferson County Fair Grounds. Teens learn practical skills including tire changing, jump-starting a vehicle, checking and adding fluids, skid control with an instructor in a controlled slide, and distracted driving simulation using golf carts with drunk goggles and texting simulations. Available as an add-on to any teen package or included in the Premium Pack.
Certified Third Party Testing
Community Driving School is a state-certified third party testing company authorized by the Colorado DMV. We offer both written permit tests and driver’s license tests at all four of our Denver metro locations.
Written Permit Testing
We administer the Colorado Written Permit Test at all locations. The fee is $40 and includes two attempts.
Driver’s License Testing
Our DMV-approved third party drive tests assess your teen’s readiness to become a licensed driver. Test in your own vehicle starting at $70, or use one of our company vehicles for $80.

What are the new Colorado GDL law changes for 2026?
Starting April 1, 2026, Colorado is expanding driver’s education requirements. All teens through age 18 (ages 14.5-18) will be required to complete the 30-hour driver’s education course, and adults ages 18-21 who don’t yet have their permit will need to complete the 4-hour Driver Awareness course. How long does the 30-hour course take to complete?
Our in-person course is split into four standalone weekend days that can be taken in any order within six months. Our online course is self-paced and can be completed as quickly or slowly as your teen needs.
Can my teen take the course online?
Yes. We offer a state-approved 30-hour online course through our partnership with DriversEd Colorado. This self-paced option allows your teen to complete the coursework on their own schedule from home.
When can my teen take the permit test?
Your teen must be at least 14 years and 11 months old to take the written permit test. They must complete the required classroom education before testing.
How much does teen driver’s education cost?
Our Teen Essential Pack is $559 and includes the 30-hour course (in-person or online), written permit test with 2 attempts, 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training, and 1 drive skills test. Our Teen Premium Pack is $749 and adds Skills Day.
